A Good Maintenance Habit Saves You Money, A Poor Maintenance Culture Costs You More

sijinius.com

Unless you are not Nigerian, it is common knowledge that we have a poor attitude to maintenance. In fact, some believe that Africans generally suffer from this bight in attitude. And this a major reason why many are poor in life.

Nigeria (and Nigerians) lose money annually due to a lack of good maintenance of systems and processes, and a general apathy to conserving resources and recycling.

When you neglect to change the oil in your engine promptly; when you refuse to polish your shoes; when you wash your expensive clothes with any kind of detergent; when refuse to read when you should even though you have paid the exam fees, when you do all these and more, you are preparing to spend more money than you ought to.

We have what is referred to as 'Fire Brigade/Emergency approach to doing things'. We wait for things to become urgent (due to neglect) before trying to fix it, or replacing it, with expensive dollars.

If you are used to always buying brand new things, and you prefer to replace your gadgets when they breakdown instead of repairing them, you could be mortgaging your future (dollars and consequently financial
 security and freedom).

Like I shared in another post, it is wiser and cheaper to maintain (things) than to replace. Even God believes in recycling and that is why we see in natural cycles such as Nitrogen Cycle, Carbon Cycle, Kreb's Cycle and others.

Imagine how expensive it will be to live if the earth had to keep creating 'fresh new water' each time we drank, washed, wasted or used up water, someway.

Yet, some of us make living expensive for ourselves when we waste recyclable and scarce resources.

Money is scarce

Whether or not you accept it, there is a limited amount of money in the world, and it is more limited in your bank account, so the more of it you keep and earn, the more wealthy you are. And the more of it you waste, the less wealthy you become.

If you want to have more money, maybe you should stop worrying about making more money, and simply change your habit/personal attitude to maintenance. Your lack, or wealth in life may be tied to your (attitude to) waste.

So plug all loop holes and avenues by which you have been hemorrhaging money and start to maintain better, instead of replace. And find better use for leftovers; recycle what you can.
